What Are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are covers that are used to change the look of teeth. They are commonly used for gaps, chipped, or damaged teeth. Dental veneers are placed at the front of the tooth to mask dental issues. There are many reasons to get a veneer:

  • Discolored teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Chipped or damaged teeth
  • Misshapen teeth

How Dental Veneers are Fit

Dental veneers are fit to the tooth using a bonding agent. A scan or mold of your tooth is taken to ensure the right size and fit for a veneer. Veneers are temporarily placed to match the coloration and trim the veneer if necessary. After polishing the veneer to perfection the veneer is cemented to the front of your tooth. After the veneer is in place any extra cement is cleaned.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Veneers

Veneers provide many aesthetic and medical advantages such as:

  • Natural appearance
  • Aesthetic alternative to other surgical options
  • Coloration matches teeth
  • May last 7-15 years with proper oral hygiene

There are also disadvantages to a dental veneer such as:

  • Veneers can crack or chip due to clenching and grinding teeth
  • A tooth is not safe from decay with a veneer
  • Veneer color cannot be altered once cemented
  • A veneer cannot be undone
  • Unhealthy teeth are not protected by veneers
