Gingivitis Therapy

Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection of the tissues that surround your teeth, and is caused by a buildup of plaque.

This might sound scary, but at this stage the disease is still reversible. Because gum disease is usually painless, you may not know you have it. This is why it’s important to schedule regular dental checkups in addition to maintaining a good dental routine of brushing and flossing.

During a Gingivitis therapy appointment in our office, your hygienist will perform an initial cleaning to remove bacteria and plaque. They will then provide you with a prescription rinse to use at home for 2 to 3 weeks, at which point we will see you again to evaluate the healing process and fine scale your teeth. At that time your dentist will determine if you are able to proceed with routine preventive care appointments or if more specific attention is required to prevent periodontal disease.
