Periodontal Scaling

Periodontal Scaling & Root Planing

Some patients require a more in-depth process if there is significant inflammation and/or bone loss present. This is called Scaling and Root Planing. During this procedure we get the tissues numb for greater comfort and remove the harmful bacteria and build up from below the gum line. This allows the tissues to heal and helps the patient better maintain a healthy mouth. After Scaling and Root Planing it may be necessary to schedule every 3-4 months to monitor tissue health.

Periodontal Disease is a progressive condition that can affect a patients oral and overall health. Emerging research indicates a link between gum disease and a variety of health conditions. These include Heart Disease, Stroke, Diabetes, Lung Infections and other degenerative diseases that can be life threatening. Unfortunately, there is no cure for periodontal disease. Periodontal Scaling & Root Planing as well as continued Periodontal Maintenance treatments in our office will attempt to arrest and control the process from progressing. Proper on-going care, both in-office and at home, is necessary for long term success and prevention of further progression of the infection.
